November 6, 2012 – Industrial Distribution Group (IDG) and its subsidiary Ensco Supply have been providing safety and fall protection services at the site of the world’s largest super crane in Jenkinsville, SC.
The crane is a critical component of the 10-year, $10B project to build a dual reactor nuclear facility, called V.C. Summer Nuclear Generation Station - one of the most expensive projects in the history of South Carolina.
The facility will feature the Westinghouse AP1000® pressurized water reactor (PWR) - the only Generation III+ reactor to receive Design Certification from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The AP1000 is an advanced 1,100 megawatt 1154 MWe nuclearpower plant that is designed to feature the world’s most advanced reactor technology, including passive safety features that cool down the reactor without need for electricity or human intervention.
The most noticeable part of the project is the Bigge Heavy Lift Derrick Super Crane. The crane is capable of lifting up to 7,500 tons, and features A-frame twin boom towers that reach 560 feet into the sky.
The crane dominates the skyline of this rural area 26 miles northwest of Columbia, SC.
With workers scaling extreme heights, fall protection is a vital component of the crane’s construction, operation and maintenance. Each worker is outfitted with harnesses, helmets, lanyards and other safety equipment specifically suited to their role and working conditions.
The project will be fully ramped in 2015 and will require more than 3,000 workers on-site. Another 600-800 full-time employees will join the permanent workforce to operate and maintain the reactors.
